A glance at the composers represented on this album (Sonny Clark, Carl Perkins, Kenny Drew, Horace Silver, Duke Pearson and Bud Powell, among others) shows what Benny Green's primary influence has been since he was a child. The hard-swinging, funky hard bop pianists of the 1950s and 1960s left a legacy of interesting original compositions, many of which are today accepted as standards in the canon.

In this album, the selections are presented as they were for the most part conceived - in a classic piano trio format. Even the other tunes by Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Tormé, Donald Byrd and Benny Golson fit neatly into this style, with the trio of Green and the two Washingtons decanting them all through excellent arrangements and superb playing that obviously comes from familiarity. …
