BRITAIN

As the leaders of the world's wealthiest countries finalize their agendas for the G8 summit in Northern Ireland on 17 and 18 June, activists are planning protests at an event which they see as the physical manifestation of capitalism's power structures.

Britain, which holds the G8's presidency for 2013, has chosen the rural location of Lough Erne, County Fermanagh, for the summit.

Among the named priorities for British Prime Minister David Cameron are transparency, accountability and tax evasion. He has also called a 'hunger summit' on 8 June, when campaigners from the British aid agencies' IF campaign have planned a mass rally in Hyde Park. They are calling on the G8 to tackle land grabs, aid and tax avoidance.

The IF campaign has frustrated some activists, who feel it has worked too closely with government, and is not linked tightly enough to people in the Global South, for which the campaign claims to work. …
