Better for bees

Bees pollinate three-quarters of our food crops, so their rapid decline in numbers has made quite a buzz in recent years. April may have brought a reprieve: the European Commission passed a continent-wide ban on certain neonicotinoids, the world's most widely used insecticides, which attack the nervous systems of the black and yellow beasts. Campaigners have welcomed the ban, though it will be reviewed in two years time.

Gravity-powered light

The 1.5 billion people without reliable access to electricity are loath to be pitched into darkness when the sun goes down. They often use kerosene - expensive and toxic - to light their homes. Now two British designers have come up with a clean solution, the GravityLight. Gears inside the invention transfer the weight of a bag, which is filled with rocks or sand, into energy. A popular crowdfunding appeal has attracted pledges of over $400,637. …
