Wrought from Sudan after a long and vicious war of independence, South Sudan is the world's newest country and the raw and emotive South Sudan Survivors is a record of the extreme hardship that the region has come through. As a chronicler of that struggle, blind guitarist General Paolino has become something of a spokesperson for the South's population with songs directly addressing pain, corruption and war.

There have been a number of examples of First Worlders recording others in various wildernesses of late (think of Crammed Disc's Konono No 1 releases or much of the Tuareg music that has emerged), and the practice isn't necessarily a bad thing - especially when nofrills brilliance is at stake. …
