On the heels of the critically acclaimed debut album of the Fat Babies, Chicago Hot (reviewed in the December 2012 IAJRC Journal), comes another recording featuring this hot band, this time bringing pianist Paul Asaro up front and center. Actually recorded a bit prior to Chicago Hot, this album (available both in CD and vinyl formats) has been a long time in the gestation stage. Paul, having mastered the stride and ragtime piano styles of the early years of jazz, realized two decades ago that the music could be better presented in the context of a small band as opposed to a solo act. A recording session in 1998 for Jazzology ultimately followed, but was never issued. It took another decade plus and the formation of Beau Sample's Fat Babies in Chicago to bring the present project to fruition. Paul has fit in beautifully with the Fat Babies and is a regular member of the group except when he is touring with singer/guitarist Leon Redbone. And what emerges on this recording is a loving tribute to Fats Waller and His Rhythm. …
