Urbani, who physically resembles my conception of an imp, died at age 36 of a drug overdose and was a fervent admirer of Charlie Parker. He was known as the wild genius of Italian jazz. Given the quirky nature of the latter that was quite a reputation to uphold but he more than succeeded with the extremely energetic and dynamic nature of his playing. He often resorts to growls and occasional honks on his chosen instrument, which I attribute to his stretching to express the ineffable. The fluidity of his solos was a joy to the ear and during his short life he enjoyed a sterling reputation in the Italian jazz world. …
