During the last 60 years or so, there have been hundreds, perhaps thousands, of publications based on the study of the Caribbean National Forest in Puerto Rico, but none like this one. The author, assisted by forester/photographer Jerry Bauer and artist Jose Vasquez, takes her readers on an indepth visit to the lush tropical world known locally as El Yunque. This book entertains and intrigues with anecdotes about the forest and those who know it best: local residents and the scientists who study and manage it.

The only tropical forest in the U.S. National Forest system, El Yunque is one of our most studied and best protected national forests. Biodiversity in number of species per acre is far greater there than at any site in the 48 contiguous states. …
