Universal Pictures International (UPI) top brass announced on Tuesday (13) that as of Monday the company had reached $1.8bn for its biggest year at the box office.

Propelling the banner year-to-date have been Fast & Furious 6 on $544.4m, Despicable Me 2 on $410m and Les Misérables on $293m.

UPI's previous record was set in 2012 when the studio grossed $1.794bn.

Other notable performers for 2013 so far have been Oblivion on $197.1m and Mama on $75.9m.

Fast & Furious 6 and Despicable Me rank as the number two and three films at the box office so far in 2013 behind Iron Man 3.

UPI has ruled the international box office six times this year. Fast & Furious 6 opened at number one in 65 territories and scored the studio's biggest launch in 41 of those markets. The action film ranks as Universal's second biggest release of all time behind Jurassic Park. …
