Members Express Unprecedented Support for Local 30-73

On the second day of the convention, delegate Dan Cerveny of Local 70-558 (Omaha, NE) approached the microphone to announce that the Mid-States Conference was donating $500 to the Twin Cities Musicians' Union, Local 30-73 (Minneapolis-St Paul). The donation followed his conference concern about the substantial financial stress on the Twin Cities musicians union due to the prolonged lock-out of the Minnesota Orchestra. Cerveny challenged the convention floor to act in kind.

The generosity of the Mid-States Conference was extraordinary, given its limited resources, but Cerveny thought that his plea might cause locals with greater resources to generate a few thousand dollars for a cause impacting the entire orchestra industry. The Minnesota Orchestra is reputed as one of the finest orchestras in America, but its musicians have been barred from employment and concert performance by the Minnesota Orchestral Association since October 1, 2012.

What ensued next was a startling person-by-person run to the convention microphones, with more than 130 delegates standing to express heartfelt support for the musicians of the Minnesota Orchestra and Local 30-73. "Clearly we were more than interested observers, as we have watched the long-standing resources of our local fade drastically in the face of ongoing representational expenses caused, not only by the lock-out of the Minnesota Orchestra, but the similar lengthy lock-out of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. …
