New Position Leads to Meaningful Work

I would like to introduce myself as the newest member of the Symphonic Services Division of the AFM here in New York City. I started in May, and so far, it's been going wonderfully. Every day brings more opportunities to make good use of my talents and skills, which are balanced by many opportunities to learn and grow.

When I found out that there was a job opening with an organization that protects the rights of hard-working musicians, I jumped on it. I knew that this line of work would be meaningful to me. After all, I spent some of my younger years as a working musician, performing rock, folk, jazz, blues, and original compositions in bars, cafés, and restaurants. On that circuit, you learn, not only the pains of being underpaid and underappreciated, but also that there is the potential to get fair wages and benefits doing what you love, if you join a union and act collectively.

What I did not know, when I got this job, was just how gratifying it would be. …
