New role for longtime TV exec is sign of changing times for biz

The Comcast imprint is finally coming to Universal Pictures.

Comcast vet Jeff Shell has been installed as chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, forcing out Adam Fogelson, who spent the past four years as chairman of Universal Pictures.

Donna Langley, who had been co-chairman under Fogelson, will be upped to chairman, reporting to Shell, who in turn reports to NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke.

Ron Meyer, the longtime Universal Studios chief, is upped to vice chairman of NBCUniversal and is tasked with showing Shell the ropes.

The Shell shuffle at U is the latest sign of the fundamental upheaval for Hollywood's old guard as the major studios struggle to forge new models for the movie biz. Declining B.O. and homevid returns coupled with rising costs, especially for studio tentpoles, have increased the pressure on the majors to reinvent the way films are marketed and distributed in a multi-platform world.
