Selected Review & Evaluation Sites

Article excerpt

Here are brief descriptions of selected sites mentioned in the accompanying article. Some sites will be reviewed in more detail in future issues in the new BooKMARK CENTRAL column. Magellan

Now owned by Excite, Magellan claims to have chosen and reviewed 60,000 sites. It is possible to browse by subject or search by concept. A special feature is the ability to limit to "Green Light Sites" that have been reviewed and deemed safe for kids. The reviews are a brief (two to three sentences) paragraph and rating based on a four-star scale. No information is provided on the four-star scale. Also no sites are being reviewed at this time due to an "editorial transition." Fifteen broad categories are available including Business, Hobbies, Science, and Shopping.

Lycos Top 5%

The Lycos Top 5% (formerly Point Communications Top 5%) selects sites based on editorial content and visual merits. It is searchable and browsable by subject area. This scale is illustrated by using rock musicians and groups (e.g., 100-90 Beatles, Rolling Stones; 89 - 80 The Who, Beach Boys, etc.), and a brief descriptive phrase about the strength or weakness of the site. No distinction is made between commercial, public, or personal sites. There are 18 categories including Culture, Technology, etc.

Yahoo! Internet Life

This site is an online companion to the print publication, and has 21 categories, including Arts & Humanities, Just for Fun, Money, and Travel. The reviews are a descriptive paragraph and a rating on a four-star scale. Information on the four-star scale did not appear to be available. The reviews are written in a column style with multiple sites (approximately five to seven) on the same page.
