Ida: It's All about Reading

Article excerpt

Welcome to the fall edition of Perspectives on Language and Literacy. As we prepare for Reading, Literacy & Learning, our 63rd Annual Conference in Baltimore, I have been reflecting on a vision for the future of IDA. Our work, efforts, and commitment revolve around one dream-to help everyone learn to read.

Throughout its history, IDA has focused on identifying dyslexia's causes and the best educational interventions to address them. We have passionately promoted the dissemination of scientific research for the purpose of improving the lives of those with dyslexia and other reading difficulties.

Unfortunately, despite our best efforts we are far from attaining our goal. Reports such as those from the National Assessment of Educational Progress indicate that about 34% of fourth grade students are reading at "below basic." So, we need to do more.

Certifying the course content of education departments at colleges and universities and curricula for reading instruction is a first step. By continuing to expand our national efforts to focus on teacher training and instruction at the university level and beyond, IDA will ensure that reading teachers have the necessary content and skills to deliver evidence-based reading instruction. However, for the sake of the families who are trying to do their best to address the immediate needs of their children, IDA is also developing certification programs that will help families identify reading programs and therapists who can help those with dyslexia and other reading challenges.

Scientific research has provided us with the best practices for reading instruction. …
