Dance music of all types has always played around with the creation of trance states: not "trance" in a strictly anthropological way, but as a way of harnessing a musical energy and transmitting it to a participant audience. Donso, the Parisian-based beat producers, have united with Malian musicians to make Denfila very much a fusion album. This isn"t a new idea but what is interesting is the depth of involvement . from both sides . in the project.

The name that Pierre Antoine Grison (aka Pag) has given his working practice . "Donso". is a clue to what"s going on. The word refers to the donso ngoni from West Africa, a six-stringed small guitar that is associated with hunters and storytellers from the Wassoullo region. …
