This is one of the most daunting books I have read.

It has a vile tale to tell, and does so unsparingly, almost without comment. There is little relief from the meticulous detail that may resonate most with the Mexicans for whom it is intended. The book is dedicated to its sources, 'some of whose names feature in the appalling catalogue of the executed and the disappeared in Mexico', and to her family and children, by an author who must rely for her life on bodyguards, in a country where they could well turn out to be her assassins. A place where severed heads are dumped in shopping malls, tortured bodies swing from bridges and the statistics, as if by intent, defy comprehension: perhaps 60,000 dead; a trade 'worth' at least $60 billion a year.

Here is the evidence that the 'war' is not on drugs but for drugs. …
