New Award to Honor Retired President

The NCEA board of directors established a new award in honor of Karen M. Ristau, who was NCEA president from 2005 to this summer.

Bishop Blase Cupich, chairman of the Board of Directors of NCEA, said that the award will be called the Dr. Karen M. Ristau Innovations Award, recognizing the president's great emphasis on innovations in education.

"This is a totally fitting honor for a dedicated, accomplished educator who has devoted her entire career to bringing fresh insights and creative innovations to Catholic education," said Bishop Cupich.

Margaret Curran, NCEA board member, said the board of directors decided on this award "because of the spirit of innovation Dr. Ristau has brought to the association and her keen sense of the possibilities creativity can bring to the education of all people." The award will be presented to an individual, school or parish religious education program that has furthered the mission of Catholic education through an innovative program or approach.

The award was announced during the association's annual convention in Houston in April and will first be presented during the 2014 convention in Pittsburgh. …
