Warner Bros Pictures International executives said The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug secured nine number one international opening days ahead of the weekend's day-and-date release in 49 territories.

The fantasy sequel from Warner Bros, New Line and MGM took an estimated $2.8m ([euro]2.1m) on opening day Wednesday (December 11) in France.

The film opened at number one on an estimated 53% market share and drew 263,000 admissions to finish some 8% higher than last year's launch of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug arrived in Sweden on $1.7m (Sek 11) from 431 screens, roughly 3% ahead of its predecessor. Norway generated $1.1m (Nok 6.7m) from 277 while Denmark produced $872,000 (Dkk 4.7m) from 181 and Finland $480,000 ([euro]249,000) from 191 through MGM.

The fantasy epic generated the best opening day of the year-to-date in Holland on $619,000 ([euro]450,000) from 172 and achieved the same distinction in Belgium on $428,000 ([euro]311,000) for 64% market share to finish opening day around 90% ahead of An Unexpected Journey. …
