A (small) win for women

Iceland is the most equal country in the world, according to the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap 2013 report. The gender gap in opportunity and resources has narrowed slightly in 108 of the 136 countries surveyed.

Pakistan, which lies just one place above the most unequal country in the world, Yemen, overall, does rather better when focusing on political empowerment. In 64th position, it is well above the likes of the Bahamas (124th) and Singapore (90th) and only four places below the US.

Fossil fuel farewell

Gas- and coal-fired power stations are shutting down in Germany due to a renewable-energy boom. The loss in profits for some electricity companies comes after the country began phasing out nuclearenergy plants in 2011. …
