Paolo Sorrentino's Italian film The Great Beauty has emerged victorious in the foreign language film category.

Spike Jonze has won best screenplay for Her, while Jared Leto was named best supporting actor for Dallas Buyers Club in arguably the toughest category of the night.

Amy Adams was named best actress in a comedy or musical for American Hustle, making it two-for-two in the actress stakes for the film at the Globes. The win marked Adams' first victory in five attempts.

In the first award of the night, Jennifer Lawrence prevailed over Lupita Nyong'o of 12 Years A Slave for her supporting role in American Hustle. The win marks her second Globe after last year's best actress triumph in the comedy or musical category for Silver Linings Playbook.

In the music categories, Alex Ebert won best score for All Is Lost, while U2 triumphed in the best original song category with Ordinary Love from Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom.

Behind The Candelabra was named best mini-series or TV movie.

The 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards kicked off at 5 pm PT (1am GMT) on Sunday January 12 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler host the show for the second year in a row.

Results will appear here as they come in. Winners will be listed in bold.

As previously announced Woody Allen is the recipient of this year's Cecil B DeMille Award.
