This story begins with its hero - Odidi Oganda - being gunned down on the streets of Nairobi. As arrangements are made for his funeral, Odidi's sister, Ajany - who has just returned from Brazil - tries to understand why and how her brother was murdered.

It initially seems as if this killing will be the central concern of Adhiambo Owuor's epic saga. But a number of other plot lines are introduced and the novel becomes a different beast entirely.

A man called Isaiah Bolton arrives from Britain looking for his father, Hugh, a former officer in the Colonial Service. There is one small problem, however: Hugh's mythological past fails to correlate with the real history that emerges as Isaiah uncovers the truth through a series of incremental clues. …
