Robocop had a strong opening in China last weekend, grossing $20.67m (Feb 28-March 2), but The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug kept the top spot in the box office chart.

Smaug grossed a further $26.57m during the week Feb 24-March 2, according to EntGroup, bringing its cumulative gross to $59.61m after ten days. Robocop, which is playing in 3D and IMAX 2D versions, came in second, while Chen Sicheng's Beijing Love Story came in third with $8.9m for a cumulative gross of $62.5m.

Chinese New Year holdovers took the next five positions in the chart: The Man From Macau came in fourth with $5.04m for a cume of $83.43m; followed by Oscar-winning animation Frozen with $4.69m (for a total of $44.83m); The Monkey King with $2.4m ($167.84m); Huayi Brothers' Ex Files with $1.21m ($19.31m); and Dad, Where Are We Going? with $0.7m ($111.87m).

Ninth and tenth positions were taken by two local films which had opened the previous weekend: Dai Wei's horror thriller Shining Soul came in ninth with $390,000 for a cume of $750,000, followed by Zhou Wei's comedy People Searching Story Of Cola Lee with $230,000 for a total of $470,000. …
