The National Audit Office is looking at the value for money offered by three FYivate Finance Initiative waste incinerator projects operated for Herefordshire Council and Worcestershire County Council, Norfolk County Council and Surrey County Council. The projects are part of the Waste Infrastructure Delivery FYogramme for which the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs has allocated £3.5bn in grants to 28 local authorities.


One of the coalition's first cost-saving drives, the socalled 'bonfire of the quangos', is to be examined by the NAO. The 2010 review of public bodies reduced their number by nearly a third. Auditors will take stock of whether departments are on track to realise both the financial and non-financial benefits intended by the exercise and to assess whether the Cabinet Office is providing effective oversight and support.


Ofsted is consulting on a new inspection framework for independent schools, aiming to ensure that only 'good' or above are acceptable standards of education. …
