Even as our frustration grows over unrealistic media messages of beauty and body, there are things we moms can do-and not do-to promote our kids' healthy body image. We need to pay close attention to cues we ourselves may be inadvertently offering, says New Jersey family counselor Heidi KieblerBrogan. Her suggestions:

Adjust your mindset. Ever stand in front of a mirror and dis your own looks? Your daughter may be watching. Remember to keep these thoughts (and who doesn't have them?) to yourself. Then focus on a more positive direction. Concentrate on eating nutritious, wholesome foods and exercising because it feels great to get in shape. You'll demonstrate to your kids that looking good is about living healthfully.

Watch your words. We tell our kids not to criticize others based on looks, and we shouldn't either. On the flip side, running into an old friend while out with your daughter and saying, "You look so great! …
