The Phoenix and the Turtle

It's been a long time in coming, but Beverley Martyn's first album in 14 years is a real treat. The Phoenix and the Turtle - the title comes from a richly allegorical Shakespeare poem - travels big distances, in both time and music. There are songs dating from Martyn's early years in the 1960s with jug band the Levee Breakers, to 'Reckless Jane', a song she wrote with Nick Drake in 1974 and which - extraordinarily - gets its first airing here.

Martyn is a singer whose association with many other artists - the hugely expansive folk guitarist Bert Jansch, Simon and Garfunkel and her former husband John Martyn - has sometimes deflected the light from her own achievements. …
