Researchers have documented something that many of us have experienced personally. It is that physical exercise plays a positive role in how we feel about ourselves and about our ability to navigate our family and work lives.

"We found that individuals who exercised regularly were more confident that they could handle the interaction of their work and home life-and were less likely to be stressed at work," writes Russell Clayton, an assistant professor of management at Saint Leo University in Florida and lead author of a study that was reported in the journal Human Resource Management.

For the purpose of the study, which was designed as a self-report survey of nearly 500 employees, conflict between work and home was categorized in two ways.
