Some careers are a calling, but the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) is calling a little louder. In an effort to combat the shortage of correctional officers, they are offering recruits a $4,000 signing bonus for a one-year contract at one of 15 eligible facilities. That is an increase of $1,000. The shortage is particularly dire in the Panhandle where rural prisons are in competition for labor with oil and gas companies. More than 150 officers are needed in that area alone. The starting salary is $29,220. Of the recruitment, Jason Clark, Public Information Director of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, says, "We understand that the correctional officer position is one of the most demanding jobs in all of state government. TDCJ is committed to doing all it can to recruit and retain correctional officers. …
