MUSIC The Kronos Quartet (above) may have started out in the contemporary classical world, but its repertoire and skilful commissioning of new music soon moved it into an area where music is simply music. The extent to which the US string players have broken boundaries is shown dramatically in their Kronos Explorer Series (Nonesuch). Marking their 40th birthday, this five-CD box set reprises the quartet's recordings of music of the world, from Africa, the East Asia and elsewhere. The set is released at the same time as A Thousand Thoughts, which visits 14 countries and contains much unreleased material.

BOOKS Several interesting new titles are adding to a growing canon that critiques mainstream economics and presents alternatives. Philip Roscoe's I Spend therefore I am: the true cost of economics (Penguin, ISBN 978 0 670 92282 6), delivers analysis while pointing to what the real alternatives might be.
