Two Kentucky pharmacists who wanted to own a pharmacy without sacrificing their family life have teamed up to enjoy the best of both worlds.

A Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy franchise in Harrodsburg allows pharmacists Debbie Duckworth and Lea Goggin to share the responsibilities and rewards of ownership and still have enough time to spend with their husbands and children. The partnership between the two women is a first for the pharmacy franchise firm based in St. Louis.

"Debbie and I share the time commitment," said Goggin, who is the mother of two. "I work part-time, with full-time responsibility and full-time pay. Yet I still have the flexibility to see my daughters' school pageants or sports events."

The partners purchased an existing Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy in June 1990, but not before conducting a few months of in-depth research. Duckworth, who also has two children, was sold on the idea by friends who were already in the Medicine Shoppe system and by the fact that she wouldn't have to worry about sidetracking her career when her son was born two years ago. …
