PCS Forms Distribution Unit to Handle Special Drugs

Certain drugs require special handling, PCS Health Systems has decided. For that purpose, the Phoenix-based pharmacy benefit management company has formed a specialty drugs distribution unit called Healthcare Delivery Systems (HDS).

Part of HDS' focus will be on delivering expensive biotechnology products to the usually small, specific populations of patients who need them. HDS will seek to coordinate these deliveries directly between the drug manufacturers and the patients.

Another focus for HDS will be the distribution of research drugs to patients enrolled in clinical trials.

In addition to delivering medications, HDS will collect patients' health information, to be passed on to physicians to help them manage the patients' therapy.

HDS will help hold down the costs of distributing specialty medications through a variety of means. For one, the new unit will provide flexibility in how a drug can be delivered to a patient, whether through a community pharmacy, a mail-order pharmacy, a home infusion provider, or a physician's office. …
