As executives from chain drugstores met in New Orleans for the eighth annual National Association of Chain Drugstores Marketplace Conference, they were urged to sharpen the front end merchandising in their stores by Jack Futterman, NACDS chairman of the board and CEO of Pathmark Stores Inc.

"With chain drugstores continuing to see erosion of the gross margins in the pharmacy department, it's more important than ever to strengthen the front end and to enhance the partnerships and programs that benefit both retailer and supplier...and the consumer as well," Futterman told attendees at the conference's opening general session.

When it comes to retail shrinkage, Futterman said he believes the problem--and the solution-may be international. He noted that he had just participated in an NACDS delegation that met in Paris with several international organizations to look at the most current technologies for use in electronic article source tagging. "The ultimate goal is an EAS [electronic article surveillance] system that will serve the greatest number of retailers and product manufacturers regardless of national borders."

Manufacturers unveiled attractive displays on the floors of the convention center and brought in celebrities such as Dick Clark and Nancy Kerrigan to capture the attention of retailers.

There was a heavy emphasis on skin care products and personal safety products on the exhibit floor.

Among the new items was Black Opal for Men Shaving Survival System from Biocosmetic Research Labs, described as the 'first complete collection" targeted for the care and treatment of African-American men's skin. …
