Over the years Huayi has entered into a range of partnerships, from single film co-ventures to cross-collateralized international co-productions such as "Mr. Go," and more elaborate structures such as the one envisaged at Jeff Robinov's company. Huayi appears to take a utilitarian approach to partnerships, avoiding them in cases where it can launch and run a business on its own, but reaching outside where it cannot.

It has recently struck an arrangement with IM Global, under which the U.S. sales and finance company will handle sales outside Asia of Huayi-produced titles. IM Global last year set up a Beijing office with former Huayi sales exec Leslie Chen at its heart.

Huayi's early partner companies included Columbia Pictures Film Production Asia on "Big Shot's Funeral," "Kekexili" and "Kung Fu Hustle"; Hong Kong's Emperor Group on "A World Without Thieves" and "Rob-B-Hood"; and Media Asia on "The Banquet."

Huayi emphasizes making and distributing films for mainland China audiences, but it also has had recurring involvement in more international films projects. …
