Someday soon more and more pharmacists and patients alike will be getting their information via interactive multimedia programs instead of pieces of paper.

The growing demand on pharmacists to deliver cost-efficient pharmaceutical care is converging with the arrival of new media technologies, such as CD-ROM, that will make the job easier. Multimedia combines text, sound, video, and animation that are controlled and coordinated by a computer. It becomes interactive when the user directly participates in the presentation of the information. The CD-ROM comes into play by preventing such multimedia programs from chewing up huge chunks of computer disk space.

The first CD-ROM multimedia continuing education program for R.Ph.s has been produced by American Medical Productions with content developed by the UCLA School of Medicine in collaboration with the University of California at San Francisco School of Pharmacy through an educational grant from Marion Merrell Dow Inc. "Allergic Rhinitis: The Role of the Pharmacists in the Age of Managed Care" uses interactive multimedia to teach pharmacists about the impact, assessment, and management of allergic rhinitis. …
