Pharmacists with the urge to take a spin on the infobahn without paying heavy tolls need only a few key strokes to merge onto HELIX, a pharmacy-oriented telecommunications service.

Funded by Glaxo Inc., the Health Education Learning & Information Exchange is pharmacy's version of the information superhighway. Its menu-driven options let pharmacists cruise down several communication boulevards, including an electronic bulletin board for one-on-one chats or joint conferences, a service to map out a plan for personal professional development, and a vast library of continuing education courses approved by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education and CE courses sponsored by Glaxo.

HELIX also includes a feature that lets pharmacists take new software for a test drive without laying out any cash. In return, users are asked to give the vendor feedback on the software, said Renato Cataldo, director, microcomputer applications and assistant professor of pharmacy administration, St. Louis College of Pharmacy. "It's an opportunity to browse at home so that when they have a need for it at the office, they know which software they want," he added. …
