The first female condom will hit retailers' shelves in September. How will Reality -- a product of Wisconsin Pharmacal's Female Health-Co. division, Chicago -- impact family planning departments in drugstores?

An informal survey of drug retailers and wholesalers indicates a positive, though cautious, attitude toward the product. Reality is in all 156 stores in the Arbor Drugs (Troy, Mich.) chain, said spokesman Fred Marx. "We have 50 different SKUs in the family planning department. Our buyer thinks it will bring in extra business, because it's a purchase that will be made by someone who wants to be on the safe side. Every time the assortment in a department increases, it should increase overall business in the department. And overall sales in the department have been good."

Condom sales have been flat at Weatherwax Drug Stores, Jackson, Mich., a four-store chain, said president Jim Weatherwax. "We're going to put the product in, but I don't necessarily think it will fly off the shelves. …
