Inaugural AFRS Scholarship Winner

Armed Forces Recreation Society

During the AFRS' Professional Training Institute, held in conjunction with the NRPA National Congress & Exposition, NRPA Student Branch Member Teresa Robertson was named the inaugural winner of the AFRS Student Scholarship. A junior majoring in therapeutic recreation at Hampton University, Hampton, Va., Robertson traveled to Tampa to accept her award.

"My professor, Mary Cunningham-- Ishmael, gave the information regarding the scholarship and encouraged me to apply for it," Robertson told Holland Ricks, the MWR Director at the Coast Guard Training Center in Yorktown, Va., the AFRS Mid-Atlantic Region Representative. "She also explained about the Armed Forces Recreation Society and how it's an association of military leisure professionals. Throughout my college career, Ms. Cunningham has done things like that, not only to help me but also to help all of the students."

Robertson didn't start out knowing she wanted to be a therapeutic recreation major. "Going into college, I really didn't know what I wanted to major in," she told Ricks. 'As I took classes, I started to understand that therapeutic recreation affects the holistic person as opposed to psychology, which concentrates just on the mind, or physical therapy, which deals only with the body I believe that therapeutic recreation deals with the whole person and that is what I wanted to do .... deal with helping the whole person in my work."
