With the end of summer approaching and Labor Day right around the corner, we will soon be focusing on the traditional fall activities what I call the "back-to-school" mentality. New school year, new clothes, new teachers, new friends, and new recreation leagues! It's truly a time of transition.

In the meantime, August is still here, and with it one last chance to relax a bit before moving on. This issue of Parks & Recreation magazine is devoted to outdoor sports and the benefits of outdoor recreation. And though the outdoors conjures up so many different images for so many different people, I would venture a guess that they are almost all positive. For me, the time I spend in my garden (and spend chasing the deer away from the fruits of my labor) and working on my lawn is probably my favorite time outdoors. Each evening, my daily walk with my dog, Misty, not only invigorates me but also allows me to have a conversation with my "best friend." And it's often the best conversation I've had all day!

For many of us, it is the camping, hiking, and boating activities that provide the spark. …
