your little customers. Balloons and a colorful, crayon like sign complete the area. The Kids' Registration Area was the idea of Ron Dodd, executive director of the Joliet Park District. Always on the lookout for a new idea, this creative concept caught Dodd's eye while he was vacationing with his wife in Norway.

"While checking into hotels in Bergen and Oslo, I noticed the kids' check-in areas," said Dodd. "The con cept seemed to keep the kids occupied; they're so inquisitive, and they just like to see what's going on." Dodd returned from his vacation armed with a photograph of the registration area to show the Joliet staff.

The Joliet Park District's structures were built inhouse at a mmimal cost. Amenities - like a bowl full of candy canes on the countertop during holiday registration - may be added to your kids' area.

According to Dodd, it's another means of customer service. "Customer service means genuine concern for the customer. Put yourself in the shoes of your customer. This may be a small addition to your facility, but one that your customers appreciate. …
