Albertson's Food-Drug Combo to Acquire American Stores

Albertson's will become the largest retail food and drug company in the United States, upon approval of its proposed acquisition of American Stores Co. The combined company, Albertson's Inc., will operate more than 2,470 stores in 37 states.

Albertson's is already one of the largest food-drug chains in the country, operating 916 stores in 23 states in the West, Midwest, and South, and it employs approximately 1,600 pharmacists. American Stores operates 1,558 stores, including 269 food-drug combination stores and 750 stand-alone drugstores under the Osco Drug and Sav-on Drugs names.

The addition of Osco and Sav-on will allow Albertson's to enter the standalone drugstore business for the first time. Michael Read, v.p., public affairs for Albertson's, said the firm's pharmacies should not be affected by the addition of stand-alone locations. "Our practice has been, for several years, to always include a pharmacy with our food stores. We'll continue that as we develop new stores," he said.

While the name of the combined company will be Albertson's Inc., plans are to retain both companies' current store names. The names of some individual stores may change, however, depending on size, location, and other factors. …
