Will Vendor-Owned Consultant Pose Conflict for You?

How would you like a consultant to come into your hospital-one owned by a vendor that provides your facility with medical supplies? Some hospitals are facing this unusual situation as a result of Becton Dickinson's acquisition of Concepts in Healthcare, a Boston-based consulting firm.

Some 40 to 50 hospital pharmacies receive consults from Concepts every year, said Marvin Feldman, director and practice manager for pharmacy consulting. Pharmacy consults represent 25% to 30% of Concepts' annual revenue, he added.

Can pharmacies and hospitals expect any price breaks from BD or Concepts for using both services? Forget it. "That already came up with a client," said Concepts president Thomas Hughes, who sold his consulting company to BD in May. "We walked away. We will not be tied to a product."

BD's purchase is the latest in a string of vendor acquisitions of consulting companies that started with AmeriNet's purchase of Kowalski-Dickow Associates in January 1996. …
