Transformers 4 Storms to $30M Int'l

UPDATE: Paramount's behemoth is off to a flying start, taking an estimated $30m and planting number one poles in its first 22 territories.

Transformers: Age Of Extinction arrived in Russia on $5.5m on Thursday (26) for the second biggest opening day ever and by comparison some 15% higher than opening day of 2011's Transformers: Dark Of The Moon.

China midnight shows delivered a new mark of $3.5m, of which $625,000 comes from Imax. Paramount Pictures International (PPI) sources said this beat the previous midnight record holder Iron Man 3 by 70% and Dark Of The Moon by 75%.

There was an all-time opening day record in Taiwan on $1.4m, rising to an early $2.6m running total.

Hong Kong produced $1m for the second biggest launch day ever and new records for a Paramount release and the franchise, roughly 37% ahead of the 2011 instalment.

The film arrives in China proper today (June 27) and a further 14 territories.

Meanwhile the North American launch has generated $8.8m from Thursday evening and midnight shows, of which Imax generated toughly $1.4m.

Paramount top brass expect total domination this weekend and have mostly dodged any clashes with the World Cup as they unleash Transformers: Age Of Extinction in 37 markets in total day-and-date with North America.

By a stroke of luck only one of six markets in this first international wave that could have progressed to the weekend second round games have made it through - Greece, who play Costa Rica on Sunday.

However all eyes will be on China, which was set to launch the film on Friday after the studio and production partner Jiaflix settled a dispute with Pangu Investments, whose Pangu Plaza Hotel features in Michael Bay's fourth entry in the sci-fi franchise. …
