Food, not bombs

Drones may soon be used to drop food aid, thanks to airborne logistics activist Andreas Raptopoulos. In the aftermath of Haiti's 2012 earthquake, prototypes delivered medicine parcels up to 10 kilometres away. The aim of the entrepreneur's start-up company, Matternet, is to reach 'anyone, anywhere', especially those who live in remote places.

Hopi on the bench

Diane Humetewa became the first Native American woman nominated to serve as a federal court judge, last May. A member of the Hopi tribe, she will work at the US District Court in Arizona, a state said to be infamous for ignoring Native American issues. The National Congress of American Indians said in a press release: 'We eagerly anticipate many more nominations of Native people to the federal bench and other offices.'
