I like to think of myself as non-judge-y, even though I'm sure I judge all too often. Lately, I've been ruminating on this old chestnut: "Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about."

I've used this mantra to better survive the rush hour home. I've repeated it to myself when tempers have flared ( just for a moment) at work. And probably most importantly, I've reminded myself of it when I've hit the schoolyard on Friday to pick up the kids and witnessed some parenting that maybe-just maybe- I didn't quite agree with.

Lord knows the kids and I have had our share of public teachable moments, when I've looked up to see what I immediately interpreted as judgment from a fellow adult (or maybe they didn't even care?). For our Fix It! issue, our feature "You Know the Type" (page 58) looks at pros and cons of being a certain kind of mom-specifically, the Drama Mama, the "Educarer" Mom, the Martyr Mommy, the Laissez-Faire Mom and my favorite, the Snowplow Mom. …
