Rivermont has come up with a classic new recording. Primarily known for their reissues of obscure recordings from the 1920s and '30s, this Lynchburg, Virginia, label has been around since 2004 and has now produced over two dozen contemporary jazz and ragtime albums, both on CD and vinyl. I discovered Carl Sonny Leyland at the 2013 Elkhart Jazz Festival and was astounded at his prowess on the piano particularly in the boogie woogie style. Bom near Southampton, England, Leyland discovered that genre at age 15 through a recording of "J.D's Boogie Woogie." Visiting New Orleans in 1988 led to his settling there for nine years where he performed regularly in the club scene before relocating to southern California where he now resides. …
