When I was a member of the Tampa Jazz Club the annual performances of the Miami-based Ira Sullivan were always an eagerly anticipated event that crammed to capacity the dilapidated warehouse type building with inadequate air conditioning in which they were held. It was situated hard by a runway at Tampa International Airport. The same thing was true at other venues on the west coast of Florida; in particular I can remember a concert he gave in Port Charlotte that was mightily appreciated. One was never disappointed at this spirited and vibrant multiinstrumentalist as he mesmerized his audiences. Now 82, I can report that he is still going strong, playing like a man many years younger, and has found a 24-year-old pianist in the person of Jim Holman who obviously has a bright future in the jazz world. …
