A glance at the titles on this CD might lead one to believe that this is just another remake of these tunes played in the same way they were performed originally. Nothing could be further from the truth. They all get a fresh reading and while you recognize the tunes they sure sound different. Dave Bennett is an excellent musician with great ideas. He puts fresh clothing on these ladies. "St. James Infirmary", for example, not only has a splendid instrumental sound but a good vocal as well. Then the

entire group takes this one out building up to a strong lament. "Sing, Sing, Sing" and "Goodbye" are as close as he gets to a traditional reading but even they have some nice harmonic changes. The disc ends up with an old Dixieland warhorse. Yet it comes off okay but may be my least favorite tune on the set. …
