Veteran vibraphonist, composer and educator, Jim Cooper has played vibes for around 40 years, leading numerous groups and performing often as both leader and sideman. Alas, he has been woefully under-recorded during his long career. Jim is the real deal; he's been there, done that and has the tee shirt to prove it. Cooper's latest CD release on the Jazmyn label is appropriately titled "Chi-Town Sessions," an issue that has unearthed from the vaults four sessions of unreleased material recorded between 1983 and 1990. This excellent music only came to Jim's notice when he was transferring a batch of old reels to CD for preservation purposes; he listened to some of the tapes and realized that they were way too good not to finally see the light of day.

The music on this disc is a mixed bag of jazz styles that range from a delicate ballad to some raucous straight-ahead up-tempo numbers. All the tunes are original compositions, with four of them penned by pianist Bob Dogan, two by saxophonist Gordon Brisker, and one each from the leader and guitarist Akio Sasajima. …
