Create Your Own Future, Too

Have you ever felt helpless? Have you ever felt that your future is in the hands of other people-people who do not necessarily have your best interests at heart? It seems that teachers often have this feeling.

One reason is that a lot of people besides teachers have a say in what goes on in the classroomschool board members, principals, parents, government officials, politicians, the media. And here you are thinking, I'm a good teacher and I do a great job. If only there were not so many rules and regulations. How can educators change the system?

First, you need to know you can change things and that AVA cares about what its members want and need. Every day AVA is working to change the traditional education system, to make it work for you and for vocational education. But you have to help us help you.

Being a dues-paying member of the association is just the first step. And while we need many more members to become an even stronger association, we also need those who join to become active advocates for vocational education and the association.

It's not good enough to accept what others say we should get. Too often, vocational education has had to settle for inadequate funding, poor administrative support and lack of respect from other educators and the public. For the good of our country and its future workforce, this cannot continue. It's gone on for so long that it will be hard to change, but it's not impossible.

Next time your colleagues complain about the lack of support, ask them if they are members of AVA. …
