Soon June will be upon us and my term as AVA president will end. At the summer meeting of the Board of Directors your new president, Laura Ward, will be sworn in and AVA's growth and progress will continue. I hope I can offer Laura the same guidance that I received from past-president Daisy Stewart.

I'd like to thank Daisy and recognize the success she's had with the AVA student member campaign. Since the campaign started last fall, more than 100 students who are enrolled in programs to become vocational educators have joined AVA. That represents nearly 10 percent of AVA's total student membership. During the 1997-98 school year 39 colleges and universities participated in the campaign, which begins again in September.

There also will be a new track especially for student members at the next AVA annual convention in New Orleans. Designed for undergraduate and graduate students, the track will feature sessions on networking, resume building, interviewing and "The Realities of the First-Year Classroom." I'd also like to thank and recognize the staff at AVA headquarters. Those who attended the National Policy Seminar may have had the opportunity to meet and chat with some of them at AVA's Open House and reception. There are only about 40 people on the AVA staff for our more than 38,000 members and I think they do a wonderful job of running our organization. …
