While women continue to achieve levels of success in various fields, their daughters still face the struggles around self-esteem that they did growing up.

Media images about femininity and masculinity send confusing messages and children's peers continue to be a strong circle of influence. It's no wonder then that parents feel they have no impact on their children or worry that children will fall victim to all sorts of perils.

Elizabeth Hartley-Brewer, in her books Raising Confident Girls and Raising Confident Boys offers hope and encouragement to parents in an easy reference format that shows how it is possible to strengthen our children's self-esteem. Hartley-Brewer, who runs workshops about guiding and motivating children, writes that the potential for our daughters' success brings with it new pressures and insecurities. Women are pressured to be economically and emotionally independent while having to maintain a beauty ideal. Eating disorders and teenage pregnancies are some of the consequences of girls not being able to deal with the pressures, she writes.

Boys on the other hand, "seem to be struggling, finding it harder and harder to succeed, conform and find a comfortable role in life." And she believes that "social, economic and educational changes seem to be undermining their essential manhood, and some see the future as promising little but constant pressure or failure, or both."

She believes it is possible however, in the midst of all the negative forces surrounding them, to raise emotionally secure and confident children and offers 100 ways to build that foundation. …
