In a professional career that spanned 80 years and immeasurable epochs of historical time, cellist Janos Starker's brief recording career for Mercury had lasting impact on generations of fellow cellists, musicians, and audiences. Starker's recordings for Mercury's "Living Presence" label were made primarily during a five-year span in the mid-1960s and focused on mainstream repertoire including the Bach solo suites, Mendelssohn and Brahms sonatas, concertos by Dvorak, Lalo, Saint-Saëns, Schumann, and encore pieces. The performances, gathered here on a tenCD box set, seem driven equally by Starker's intense, elegant, note-perfect presence. Mercury's full-range, razor-sharp sound, reflected the industry-wide confluence of charismatic virtuosos and high-tech analogue technology that was tapping into and fueling the demand for classical music. …
